CHAMPIONS!

Dream Come True For Norcross

July 1, 2006, NDY Press

LILBURN - In a game befitting of a championship tournament final, the Norcross American All Stars defeated the South Gwinnett All Stars 4-3 in 5 innings in front of a capacity crowd. After losing earlier in the day to these same South Gwinnett All Stars in the opening game of the championship final, Norcross looked to turn the tables and finish the tournament on a high note. Despite the loss, confidence ran high for the Blue Devils as they ended the loss with a last inning 2-out rally, scoring 3 runs and rattling the opposing defense who committed 2 errors, contributing to the rally.

Like almost every tournament game thus far, Nelson Stewart reached base in the first inning, collecting a single on a 2-2 count. Unfortunately, Norcross could not capitalize on the leadoff single and headed to the bottom of the first without a score. For the first time in this tournament, Norcross started the game with a pitcher other than Michael Bauer. Cameron Craport took the mound in the bottom of the first for Norcross against an imposing South Gwinnett lineup. Despite his best efforts, South Gwinnett took the early 1-0 lead, scoring an unearned run when the lead off batter reached on an error and scored on a groundout. The damage could have been worse had it not been for a great grab by Wiley West, who caught a fly ball to deep center field, just two steps from the outfield fence.

Norcross continued their early inning struggles at the plate, as South Gwinnett's Rheney (pronounced Kah-soon Rah-heeny) retired the side in order in the second, and allowed only a walk to West in the third. South Gwinnett, however, could not take advantage and extend their lead in the second. Craport gave up a single to start the inning, but retired the next two batters before allowing his second walk of the game. Brendan Furry came in to relieve Craport and ended the inning on a called third strike. But South Gwinnett's fortunes turned in the third, as Brown hit a 2-out, 2-run homer to increase the lead to 3-0.

For the third time in the tournament, the Norcross Americans made a come from behind run at the South Gwinnett Comets in the 4th inning. Brantley Evans started the attack with a line drive single that was immediately followed by another single from Nelson Stewart. Andrew Thunhorst reached on an error and Norcross got their first score as Evans scored. After walks by Patrick Hutton and Zack Walch scored Stewart and ended Rheney's outing for South Gwinnett, Weston Bell proceeded to single in the tying run as Thunhorst crossed the plate. Norcross took the 4-3 lead on a James Todd single scoring Walch, both of whom, poetically would play key roles in the final two innings.

With the tension mounting, Zack Walch took the mound in his first outing of the tournament. After hitting the first batter, Walch collected himself and retired the next two on a fielder's choice and a strike out. The "Never Say Die" Comets continued to put the pressure on with some icy patience at the plate, loading the bases courtesy of walks before Walch finally struck out the final batter of the inning, preserving the 4-3 lead after four. Despite a single from Furry and a walk by Higgins, Norcross could not manage to extend their newly found lead, putting the game in the hands of the team's senior statesman, Walch. After striking out the leadoff hitter, Walch gave up a single to the Comets' Brown. With the momentum starting to swing, South Gwinnett's Scarbriel drove a single to the left field fence, but Ford Higgins threw a bullet to Craport at third to nail Brown trying to go from first to third on the play. Scarbriel, who had advanced to second on the play was now in scoring position as the Comet's cleanup hitter stepped up to the plate. Every pitch carried an extra weight as the count went to 3-2. With the game on the line, who could blame both sides for hopes of little league magic as every baseball player's dreams are inspired by these moments. In the blink of an eye, the moment reached its apex as South Gwinnett's Turnbull hit a screaming shot down the first base line that was stopped abruptly by what can only be described as the play of the tournament as James Todd, with some quick glove work, snagged the rocketing ground ball and trotted to first to register the final out of the game and the tournament, sealing the win and the tournament championship victory for Norcross. In one climactic moment, the tournament came to an end as one team celebrated and another sat stunned in an emotional cacophony not unfamiliar to championship games. As Norcross heads off to the state tournament, regardless of the outcome, they will all remember their little league dream come true.
