Norcross Falls Short in State Opener

MONTICELLO - In the opening round of the Dixie Youth Peewee All Star State Tournament in Monticello, Georgia, Collins Hill
edged the Norcross American All Stars 3-1. The consensus in the stands was that Norcross received a very unfavorable first
round draw. Undaunted, Norcross came ready to play and determined to get a victory against the Eagles. Despite a herculean
effort from Norcross, they came up just a few runs short against a traditional state powerhouse.
It was evident from the very start that this was going to be a big challenge offensively for the Norcross Americans as the Collins Hill
starting pitcher took the mound staring eye to eye with Manager Walch. In the top of the first, Patrick Hutton reached base
after getting hit by a pitch from the Collins Hill starter, but was unable to advance. Back in his traditional role, Michael Bauer
took the mound for the Norcross All Stars in the bottom half of the first. After the first batter grounded out to first,
Collins Hill's next two batters reached on hard singles. That brought up the Eagles' cleanup hitter, who hit a hard line shot
to right center field that landed over the wall for a 3 run homer. Bauer remained unphased as he induced the next batter to pop
out. Despite another Collins Hill single, Bauer got out of the inning without any further damage by getting a called third
strike for the final out of the inning.
Norcross got on the board in the second inning as Weston Bell and Cameron Craport reached on consecutive singles with no outs. Bell
hit a sharp liner down the left field line between the 3rd base bag and the 3rd baseman; Craport hit a hard grounder up the middle
that the second baseman made a quick move to the ball but could not field it cleanly in time for the force out. After James Todd
reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Bell to third, Wylie West knocked him in on a ground out to second to cut the lead to 3-1.
Bauer took the mound again in the second and did a fine job of spreading out two walks, stranding them after the final two batters
of the inning struck out.
After a quick top half of the third inning for Norcross, Andrew Thunhorst took the mound in the bottom of the frame in an attempt
to throw a different look at the Eagles' hitters. The plan worked as Thunhorst had every Collins Hill batter flailing and leaning
on every pitch. Collins Hill managed to get two singles in the inning, but left them stranded as the powerhouse top of Collins Hill's
order could not muster any offense against the steady diet of offspeed pitches being hurled at them.
In the top of the fourth, Norcross again made an attempt to get a rally going as Nelson Stewart reached base on the third Norcross
single of the game and Thunhorst reached on an error by the second baseman, resulting in two on with one out. Unfortunately, Jenkins,
the Collins Hill pitcher, buckled down, striking out the final two Norcross batters. Thunhorst returned to the mound in the bottom
of the fourth and was even more effective than his first inning of work; inducing a pop up, making nice work of an attempted bunt
for the second out, and striking out the final Eagles' batter on a ball in the dirt that had the hitter swinging at air.
In Norcross' final at bat, again the stubborn Blue Devils fought to tie the game as Craport reached base with the help of another
error by the Collins Hill second baseman. But after James Todd reached on a walk; King, the Collins Hill fireballer, finished the
game with two strike outs, sealing the win for Collins Hill.
Norcross made a valiant attempt to take one from the vaunted Collins Hill All Stars, but just couldn't muster enough offense. The
Blue Devils' pitching by Bauer and Thunhorst was once again extremely good along with an outstanding defensive effort as Norcross
reached another goal with their first error-free game of the tournament season. The effort wasn't good enough to win, but it was
good enough to earn the respect of Collins Hill and the others who witnessed it; and serves notice that no one should take this
Norcross team lightly in this tournament. Researve your seats for tomorrow's game as Norcross takes the field again on Sunday at
1 PM in hopes of extending their season.
