Successful Tourney Run Ends For Norcross

July 10, 2006, NDY Press

MONTICELLO - The much ballyhooed tournament season for the Norcross Blue Devils ended today in Monticello at the hands of the Newton County All Stars in front of a capacity crowd of proud parents, grandparents, family, friends, and baseball fans. Norcross did not play their best game; but the grit, determination, and git 'er dun attitude of the entire team showed through to the very end in the 6-4 loss. This team had accomplished a great deal during this All Star season; winning the District 7 tournament, achieving the majority of their goals, and finishing with a tournament record of 6 wins against 3 losses.

Newton County got out to a fast start in the top of the first, as Michael Bauer took the mound for Norcross. The fastball hitting Newton County squad had their first two batters reach on back-to-back singles. After Johnson for Newton County was awarded first after being hit by a pitch, the first run of the game was scored on a fielder's choice. Bauer pitched his way out of the inning without further damage, though, backed up by solid defensive play. After a pop up to Andrew Thunhorst for the first out, Phillips for Newton grounded into a fielder's choice that scored a run, but Newton's Richards was thrown out (Hutton to Stewart) at the plate also trying to score on the play. Norcross was unable to respond in the first, as Newton County's Ritchey pitched a dominant first.

The biggest run producing inning of the nite came in the 2nd as Newton County scored 4 more times, helped out by some uncharacteristic Norcross errors. The Blue Devils came right back with three runs of their own, as Cameron Craport started the rally, reaching first on a fielding error. After a James Todd single resulted in runners at first and second, Wylie West singled to score Craport and get Norcross on the board. Jarett Bache (pronounced BOK) walked to load the bases for Brendan Furry who singled in Todd and West to round out the scoring in the second with Newton County leading 5-3.

Zack Walch came in for Norcross to pitch in the 3rd and pitched a solid inning for the Blue Devils. Helped out by another Norcross error in the 3rd, Newton County scored their sixth run of the game. They weren't able to muster any more than that as Norcross made another exciting defensive play to nail a Newton County runner trying to score as Ford Higgins threw a bullet to Nelson Stewart who did a masterful job of blocking the plate and getting the out. Despite a walk by Higgins and a single by Thunhorst, Norcross was unable to score in their half of the third.

Norcross handed the ball to Brendan Furry in the fourth to keep the game close and he was up to the task, holding Newton scoreless with the help of some more defensive gems. Zack Walch made a combo leaping/stretching grab on a soft liner hit to his right for the first out of the inning. After a walk, Andrew Thunhorst made a great snag on a liner at shortstop and doubled off the runner at first on the play. After two outs had been recorded, Weston Bell walked for Norcross in the bottom of the fourth and Cameron Craport singled, but were left on base as the inning ended.

With time running out on the Blue Devils, Furry induced the leadoff batter in the top of the 5th to pop out to Bauer, who made a great running play on the ball; and Thunhorst, getting more chances than in any prior game, continued to deliver defensive excellence, nabbing a hard grounder and making the smooth throw to first for the out. Furry finished off Newton County on a called third strike. Norcross' last gasp effort was a good one as Wylie West reached with a leadoff walk, followed by a single by Jarett Bache. Michael Bauer hit a run scoring single, knocking in West with one out. But that would be the end of Norcross' attempt to score as Newton County's Ritchey reached back for something extra to finish off the Blue Devils much as the game began. While Norcross routed several teams during their 2006 tournament run, they were never out of any game that they lost, and that included this one. The 6-4 loss was hard fought and Norcross had their chances, but the valiant effort ended just short. Speaking for all of the fans, we are proud of each and every player and thank coaches Walch, Hutton, and Bache for their time, dedication, and exceptional tutelage. Our boys will remember this experience for a lifetime.
