5/28/2007 - Norcross Takes Second in Wooden Bat Tournament - Playing for the third day in the highly competitive All American Wood Bat Classic, Norcross battled its way into the final championship round beating the Oviedo Knights 7-5 in the Monday morning "final four" game. Oviedo was a tough central Florida team that was the top seed from the opposite "A Pool" of the 12-team tournament.

Sam Grosswald batted 3 for 3 and pitched 2 innings, striking out 3 Knight batters to lead the Blue Devil charge into the championship game. Michael Bauer again pitched 2 outstanding innings combining with Grosswald to hold the Central Florida team to five runs during the game.

The day's schedule would be grueling for the exhausted Blue Devils as they had literally only 15 minutes to prepare for their 6th and final game of the weekend against the Oconee Threat, a well-traveled team from Watkinsville, Georgia.

Falling behind early 5-2, the Blue Devils tried to turn the momentum as Zach Walch gunned down a Threat runner trying to go home after a Walch fly ball catch in right field. Jacob Gassert would soon after notch an unassisted double play catching a fly ball and stepping on second to put out a surprised Threat base runner.

The Blue Devil bats attempted several rallies but were unable to score more than 3 runs over the 6-inning game against the strong defensive Oconee team.

Even with an 8-3 final score, the Blue Devils represented Gwinnett County well in the highly competitive tournament, bringing home a major team trophy, individual trophies for each Blue Devil player, and a great weekend of baseball memories for all.

With a long tournament weekend behind them, preparation begins immediately for the GGBL Tournament June 2nd. The Norcross team will practice at Pinckneyville Park, Field 4, Tuesday evening from 6 PM to 8 PM.
