2009 Spring Major Red Sox Season Diary

05/14/2009 - Braves Eliminate Red Sox

The Red Sox couldn't hold the one run lead in the time shortened 3rd round tournament game on Thursday night at Pinckneyville Park.  Leading by a score of 5-4 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning and no time remaining on the game clock the Red Sox needed just 3 outs to advance to the 4th round.  It wasn't to be this season for the Red Sox as the Braves put three bloop base hits together including a ground ball sure out that hit the first base bag and bounced into short right field allowing the tying run to score.  The winning run crossed the plate a few moments later as the Red Sox lost 6-5.

It was a fantastic year for these Red Sox who ended the season with a 7-5-1 record.  The Villatoro's brought treats which included some pretty funcky tropic drinks.  We look forward to seeing everyone one last time this season in a few weeks at our end of the season party.  More details to follow.

05/13/2009 - Red Sox vs. Braves in 3rd Round

The Red Sox will face the Braves in game 3 of the 2009 Spring Major Championship tournament.  With a win, the Red Sox will play at 1pm on Saturday 5/16 and with a loss will be eliminated from the tournament.  Complete Bracket.

05/11/2009 - Red Sox Win Pitchers Dual

The Red Sox won the rubber match by beating the White Sox 4-3 and won the season series 2 games to 1 on Monday night.  For the Red Sox, Nathan Settlage pitched 4 innings giving up only 3 runs and Jacob Koerper recorded the save in the 5 inning contest.  The White Sox is the first team the Red Sox have eliminated so far in the double elimination tournament.  With the win the Red Sox are now 7-4-1 on the season. Ian Campbell returned to the game after a short stint on the DL.

Ice Cream Sundaes were provided by the Knect family after the game.

The Red Sox play in game three of the tournament on Thursday night at 6pm when they will play the loser of the Braves vs. Rangers.  Good seats are still available.  Treats for Thursday's game will be provided by a family to be named later...

05/09/2009 - Red Sox Comeback Falls Short, Lose Tournament Opener

The Red Sox lost the opening game of the tournament as a late rally fell short to Rangers by one run on Saturday.  The Rangers hit the ball well throughout the game scoring in all but one inning.  The final inning ending when the Red Sox were called out at third base on an obscure youth baseball rule that does not allow sliding head first while wearing a face mask.

The Red Sox play in round two on Monday night at 7:45pm at Pinckneyville Park.

05/06/2009 - Red Sox Regular Season Ends with Rainout

Tonight's game vs. the Mets has been rained out.  This concludes the Red Sox regular season with a final record of 6-3-1 and a .667 winning percentage.  The Sox achieved their original goal set in the beginning of the year to go better than .500 on the season.

05/06/2009 - Red Sox Split Season Series with Angels

The Red Sox leading by a score of 4-2 when "Interim Manager" David Settlage was ejected from the game (this reporter actually thinks he had a business deal he needed to leave for).  The 4 early runs scored were the only runs produced on the night as a couple of nice plays in right field by the Angels shutdown the Red Sox late inning threats.

Nathan Settlage allowed 2 runs over the first 2 innings and rookie right hander Eric Knecht came on in the third inning for his pitching debut.  With the bases loaded the Red Sox were hoping to have Jacob Koerper work his Houdini magic to get out of a tough jam when the Angels brought their version of Andre the Giant to the plate and the man child crushed a 3-2 pitch over the Red Sox left fielder William Teague.  Teague was recently activated off the 21 day disabled list for the game.

Johnny's Pizza was un-fashionably late with the Koerpers entry in the Snack Challenge.  The Red Sox play their last regular season game of the season (weather permitting) at 7:45pm Wednesday evening.

05/05/2009 - Tournament Bracket Released

The Red Sox play the Rangers in game 1 of the 2009 Spring Major Championship tournament.  Game 2 will either be Tuesday Night at 7:45pm (Red Sox 1st round win) or Monday night at 6pm (Red Sox loss).  Complete Bracket.

05/05/2009 - Tournament Rules

The season ending tournament begins this weekend.  The Tournament has a set of rules that are slightly different than those used during the regular season.  Read More on the rules.

05/02/2009 - Red Sox Offensive Explosion - Win 15-7

With replacement player Greg Fallon (white sox) stepping in as our 9th player the Red Sox had a huge offensive showing on Saturday afternoon beating the Rangers by a score of 15-7.

The Red Sox trailed 2-1 after the 1st inning and neither team scored in the 2nd. The game was tight and tied at 5 after the 3rd inning. The Red Sox led 8-6 after the 4th when they poured it on in the 5th with 7 runs in the top half to seal it (Mathematically). The standing room only Fenway faithful got treated to a 1 hour and 50 min game.

Offensive starts on the team were Will with 4 singles, 4 singles by Ian, Hunter with a 2 RBI single in 5th, and clutch pitching in 4th by Jacob as he again showed that veteran leadership by Walking a few tough hitters to load the bases and then escape the jam with only 1 run allowed.  Coolhand Luke pitched the first 2 innings and had a double in the 3rd.

Great "Pinch Coaching" by Vinny - as Coach Settlage was forced to stay off his feet and sit on the bucket all game due to a freak accident while watching the Australian Women's national water ski team practice from high above his boat dock while drinking a cold Hamm's on Friday night.

Awesome Fried Chicken and Water Mellon snack were enjoyed by all!

04/30/2009 - Red Sox Battle Not Over in 1-1 Tie

In a game that was a cross between a rugby match and baseball game ended up with a soccer game score - the Red Sox tied the Mets by a score of 1-1. The Red Sox defense was the story of the game, playing with only 8 and help from the Mets in left field (no doubt under strict instructions to not make any diving plays).

Starting pitcher Nathan Settlage allowed no runs in his two innings of work. The top of the second inning had two great hits by the Mets, but fantastic catches were made by Eric Knecht in right field, and Hunter Dye in center.

In the bottom half of the inning Anders Olsen had a great hit, but no runners scored.

The third inning saw two more good catches, this time by Luke Dagostino and Jake Koerper - but the Mets scored got on the board first with their only run of the game. The bottom of the third started with a walk to Nathan Settlage and hard line drive up the middle by Hunter Dye. Nathan Settlage made a great attempt to steal home on a passed pitch, but was caught for the first out of the inning. Ian Campbell was walked, and with two runners on, Jake Koerper hit a fly ball to center field for a double, allowing Hunter Dye to score the Red Sox only run of the night.

The fourth inning brought a 5th outstanding catch by Will Nowak. Jake Koerper pitched a scoreless inning. The bottom of the 4th had a single by Will Nowak followed by Nathan Settlage’s 3rd walk of the evening. Hunter Dye had a hard hit to move the runners to scoring position. Then Erick Knecht hit a high foul ball, and Will started to run home. Will made a heroic attempt to prevent Carson White from catching the ball, but his tackle was unsuccessful and the umpire ruled it the third out of the inning.

Interim Third Base Coach Kent Koerper was quoted as saying after the game "If Will is going to go after the big boys, we need to put some pads on him! For the record, he did knock the ball out, unfortunately I was the only one to see it on the ground."

Will Nowak bounced up quickly and pitched a three up/three down inning. The Red Sox were unable to score in the bottom of the 5th, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The highlight of the game was 5 outstanding catches by 5 different players for the Red Sox. For the night, The Red Sox had 6 hits and 1 run scored. The Mets had 2 hits and 1 run scored.

Treats were provided by the Olsen family which as one parent commented  "A very popular spread of Chick-fil-A nuggets and OREOs! A big hit!"  The Red Sox will get a rematch with the Mets next Wednesday - May 6th at 6pm.

04/25/2009 - Shorthanded Red Sox Avenge Loss to White Sox

The Red Sox were shutout by the Red Sox just one month earlier by a score of 6-0, but with star players Settlage, Dye and Campbell off singing camp fire tunes - the Red Sox beat the White Sox 8-4 with outstanding pitching and timely hitting.

Luke Dagostino pitched 3 innings allowing only 2 runs and Jacob Koerper closed out the game pitching the final two innings also allowing 2 runs.  Anders Olson was the offensive star of the game going 3 for 4 with 3 big two out RBI's.  Eric Knecht had his hardest hit line drive base hit of the season over the shortstop and later scored.

The Treat Challenge rolled on with outstanding Italian sandwiches on sour dough bread and lemonade provided by the Nowak's. The Red Sox play host to the Mets at 6pm Thursday night at Pinckneyville Park.

04/21/2009 - Rare Thursday Night Practice

Coach Scott has arranged a scrimmage between the Red Sox and the Norcross 12U Blue Devils.  Depending on player availability we may split the two squads into two evenly matched teams.

04/20/2009 - Red Sox Beat Mariners

The Red Sox swept the regular season series Monday night by besting the Mariners 7-1.  The Red Sox shut-out the Mariners in an earlier meeting by a score of 8-0.

The Player of the game was Miguel Villatoro who made two great plays in the bottom of the 6th inning with the bases loaded to help seal the victory.  At the plate, Miguel got a standing ovation from the Fenway Faithful as he put the bat on the ball and in play during both plate appearances.

Nathan Settlage struck-out 4 batters in the first allowing only one run.  Jacob Koerper came on in the third inning and despite loading the bases with no one out - was able to get out of the tough jam.  He again loaded the bases in the 4th and again was able to pull a Harry Houdini and escape with no runs scored.

A clutch 2 out 2 RBI double by Andres Olsen gave the Red Sox some breathing room in the 3rd inning.  Ian Campbell recorded his 8th consecutive hit in his last 8 plate appearances.  Ian's second AB in the March 30th loss against the Braves was the last time he recorded an out.  He got a hit in his third plate appearance in that game and since has gone 4-4 and 3-3.  Ian has gotten a hit in every game this season.  Nathan Settlage has also hit safely in every game.

The Red Sox play the White Sox at 1:30pm this Saturday at Pinckneyville Park.  I think I heard that Snacks for this game were traded for a player to be named later...

04/19/2009 - Red Sox Win "2 Minute" Warning over Angels.

The Red Sox pounded out 13 hits including a 4 hit day by Ian Campbell to come from behind for the 7-6 victory in the rare 6 inning game.  6 Red Sox got 4 at bats in the game and were able to overcome 9 strikeouts in the game and walking 5 times. With 2 minutes remaining on the game clock and the Red Sox down by a run, home plate umpire Charlie crossed his arms and pronounced "Ball Game!".  After a short conference with Charlie's son Zach (a lefty who pitched in college), the men in blue allowed the 6th inning to materialize.

Will Nowak trotted out to the mound and shutdown the Angels in the top half of the 6th inning.  After a lead off double by Nowak and a single by Nathan Settlage, Ian Campbell connected on walk-off single to right field - his 4th of the day.

The treat challenge clearly has a new leader.  The Settlage's put the pressure on the remaining parental participants with Hot Dogs, Popcorn and Cotton Candy.  The Red Sox are back in action Monday night - 6pm against the Mariners.

03/30/2009 - Red Sox Doubled Up 10-5

The Red Sox fell behind early and lost the time of possession and the game 10-5 in a 4 inning time shortened game on a chilly Monday night in Norcross.  The kids battled back but needed a few more innings to get it done.

Thanks to the Dye's for bringing Hot Dogs for the Snack Challenge.  Weather permitting - next up is a rain makeup game on Wednesday night, 6pm.

03/27/2009 - Saturdays Game Washed Out

The Red Sox are rained out again for Saturday - all games at the park have been cancelled.  It is supposed to be all clear on Sunday - please try to get out and practice then if you can.

03/25/2009 - Red Sox Shutout by White Sox

In a mirror image of the game the night before, the Red Sox were shutout by the White Sox by a score of 6-0.  The game featured outstanding defensive plays by the Red Sox including two "fine running grabs" by center fielder Will Nowak and two nice "one handed grabs" by William Teague - one at third base and one in center field.  Will Nowak also contributed at second base on a smash headed up the middle he picked it off with an outstretched glove to throw out the speedy White Sox runner.

Making his Major League pitching debut, Hunter Dye mowed down the White Sox in the top of the 5th inning not allowing a run and giving the Red Sox one final shot to score a run.

Big thanks to the Teague's for hosting round two of the snack challenge after the game.

The Red Sox are back in action this Saturday playing the Angels at 3:15pm.  Mrs. Dagostino is up for the treat challenge this Saturday afternoon - The Koerper's have requested no liver and onions as they are planning this for their treat day on 4/1 vs. the Mets (April fool's day).

03/24/2009 - Red Sox Reach Defensive Goals

The Red Sox (2-0) reached their defensive goals of playing an error free game and shutting out an opponent on Monday night as they downed the Mariners by a score of 8-0.  Complete game story forthcoming.

03/23/2009 - 2009 Snack Schedule Posted

Our team mom (Coach Scott) has finally posted the snack schedule for this season.  Each family will bring snack's once this season.  It is your duty to "out do" the family that precedes you in the "snack challenge".  The family with the best snacks (as voted by the coaching staff) gets a "no snacks" pass during the tournament.  Good luck.

03/21/2009 - Red Sox Late Rally Upend Cardinals

The Red Sox started slow Saturday but was able to rally late with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to pull out its opening game victory at Pinckneyville Park.  Starting pitcher Nathan Settlage held the game close leaving after 2 innings and a 3-0 deficit.  Settlage struck-out 5 Cardinal batters in two innings.  Luke Dagostino came in to work the 4th inning giving up 1 run and striking out 2 Cardinals.  Jacob Koerper finished the game striking-out another 2 Cardinals and yielding one run.  On the day, the Red Sox pitchers struck-out 9 while only walking 3.

Offensively, the Red Sox had a tough time against Cardinal pitcher Jake Karalexis only reaching base once per inning over the first 3 innings.  Down 4-0 in the 4th inning, Ian Campbell led off the inning with a hard hit single and stole second.  After Koerper and Dagostino drew walks to load the bases, Anders Olsen stepped in with a 3-0 count and laced a line drive to right field that got by the Cardinal's subbing All-Star right fielder.  After the dust cleared the bases were emptied and Anders made it all the way around to third for a 3 RBI triple.  Then with heads up base coaching by Nathan Settlage and Andrew Thunhorst earned the final run of the inning by sending William Teague to 2nd base following a base on balls and when the Cardinals took the bait, Thunhorst sent home Olsen for the tying run.

The Cardinals came right back with a run in the top half of the inning to take a 1 run lead.  The Red Sox feeling more comfortable at the plate as the game moved along took only 3 batters to score the final two runs as Ian Campbell (2-3 with a run scored and batted in) had the game winning walk-off hit.

The Red Sox are back in action on Monday night as they take on the Mariners at 6pm - good seats are still available.  The Red Sox rain makeup games will be Tuesday (3/24) at 6pm vs. the White Sox and the following Wednesday (4/1) vs. the Mets also at 6pm.
